Martin Luther was a monk who decided that he did not agree with some of the ways that the Catholic Church was interpreting the bible.  He was a fellow who believed in some new truths about some Christian ideals. Luther's ideas, and actions contributed to the Protestant Reformation, and the subsequent Catholic Counter Reformation.
